Buying Scrap Aluminum Transformers
Posted: November 10, 2020
When you are on job sites you will often be changing out all types of electrical equipment from transformers to old banged up the conduit. Like we say down at Rockaway Recycling…if it’s metal, we will buy and scrap it!
Where To Scrap Aluminum Transformers
Aluminum transformers are becoming more and more common in the workplace because aluminum is much cheaper than copper, and because of that many companies turned to aluminum transformers due to the cheaper prices.
What To Do With Them
We do not advise that you take the aluminum transformers apart…there is so much work involved for a very small return. The aluminum transformer winding is a very tough item to disassemble and by doing so you won’t make much extra money when you go to scrap it.
One thing that you need to do with the aluminum transformers is always to take the copper/aluminum cabling that was running to it off of it so you can make a few extra dollars when you sell it. These pieces will weigh anywhere from 3-20 pounds, and that is a valuable wire to sell before you sell the whole transformer.
We normally tell people not to take the coils off of the aluminum transformers and just to leave them on the core. It takes so much work to pull them off that it never makes much sense to do that much extra work. It could take you at least 2-3 hours to take the coils off sometimes and you may only make $5-20 extra but that will be a lot of work to do.
How Can Rockaway Recycling Help
Aluminum transformers come in so many different sizes and we will buy any size that you have. Some of those transformers that you can get are really big and we will always help you unload them with the forklifts or whatever other tools that you need us to use to help get them off of the trucks.
If you have a larger load of material that may require a scrap metal pickup, we can offer our services in the Tri-State area (NJ/NY/PA). Contact us about your pick up services needed and we will be happy to help.
INDUSTRIAL SCRAP SERVICES
We always tell customers that the easiest thing to do to figure out the difference between aluminum and copper transformers is to scratch the coil part with a file. It white…aluminum, and if red….copper.
