The installation team was tearing out old warehouse equipment and required a massive 40-yard roll-off dumpster to handle large volumes of heavy steel framing and structural supports.
When our driver arrived in Mahwah for the initial container pickup, access to the dumpster was completely blocked by wooden pallets stacked directly in front of the unit. Working alongside the contractor’s site crew, a forklift operator cleared the blocked driveway so our truck could align with the container.
Additionally, the steel material was loaded above the top rim of the dumpster. Federal and state transportation laws strictly require all roll-off dumpsters to be legally tarped before entering public roads. The site’s forklift operator had to trim down the top layer of steel offcuts so the load could be safely covered and transported.

The primary material generated during this warehouse renovation was unprepared #1 steel. Unprepared #1 steel consists of heavy industrial scrap—such as structural beams, thick steel channels, and conveyor framing—measuring over 1/4-inch in thickness.
Heavy steel is ideal for industrial recycling, but maintaining material purity is essential. On a subsequent pickup attempt at the same Mahwah location, the 40-yard dumpster was again overloaded above the rim, but this time a top layer of wooden pallets, trash, and cardboard was dumped on top of the steel. Mixing general debris into a scrap metal container contaminates the load, making it unprocessable at the metal recycling yard until the waste is removed.
