Starting at Rockaway Recycling
Posted: August 16, 2013
When I began at Rockaway Recycling I had no idea what I was getting myself into. This awesome group of people have welcomed me and taught me everything that I need to know about scrapping and they (we!) do the same for our customers.
Starting out I knew little about scrapping. I knew where the local scrap yard was and I knew of people that made A LOT of money from pieces of metal and cars. Going through our website I was able to learn so much more about the different kinds of metals and ways to make even more money when it comes to recycling them.
The first and most important scrapping tip I learned was the magnet test. A simple magnet can tell you if your metal is worth scrapping or not. If it sticks it’s usually ferrous (i.e. steel and iron) and not worth much, but should be recycled anyway. If it does not stick, your metal is non-ferrous and you have the potential make a lot of money. Many common metals, like copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel and bronze are categorized as non-ferrous metals. You can even use a magnet from your fridge. If you don’t have a magnet on your fridge (why not?!), we can get you one when you bring your scrap!
