Mythbusters: Scrapping Edition

Posted: May 8, 2014

Many times you will hear different things from people about how to make more money from your scrap materials. Sometimes, they are true. For example, you should always separate your materials before coming to the yard. But other times what you hear may not be true. Here are some common myth’s about scrapping that will help you in the long run.

MYTH: Catalytic converters should be taken apart completely before scrapping
TRUTH: The only thing you need to do when scrapping a catalytic converter is cut off the ends so our scale managers can see inside and get you an accurate price based on the honeycomb inside.

MYTH: Always cut the copper wire from transformers.
TRUTH: Cutting the copper wire will only get you a couple extra cents a pound and is not worth the time or effort unless you have A LOT.

MYTH: Picking up scrap from someone’s garbage pile is not stealing
TRUTH: You should ALWAYS get permission to take someone’s scrap materials. Depending on where you live there may be laws against taking things out of someone else’s disposal.

MYTH: Leaving your materials in longer lengths will result in more money.
TRUTH: Many times smaller, more compact pieces of materials will weigh in higher than long loose pieces. Prepare your materials before scrapping them.

MYTH: Computers and harddrives have a lot of precious metals in them.
TRUTH: With the developing technology, computers and other electronics actually have less precious metals than they used to. You can find prices for e-waste on our website so you have an idea of how much you will be getting for your computers/hard drives.
